In Caribbean Resort news, Blue Diamond buys St Lucia’s Smuggler’s Cove Resort. Blue Diamond, a division of Toronto -based Sunwing Travel Group, didn’t disclose how much it paid for the beachfront all-inclusive resort. Smuggler’s Cove has 357 rooms and four restaurants. It has no plans to rebrand the St. Lucia property.

In Mexico’s Caribbean Coast, Riu reopens renovated Cancun hotel. The Riu Cancun has been closed for several months for extensive renovations, the $30 million renovation project included all guestrooms, restaurants, pool areas and gardens as well as the lobby and facade. The property is located in the heart of Cancun’s hotel zone.

Hotel Cacao, a boutique hotel in Playa del Carmen is set to open in September. Cornerstone, the hotel management and development company behind San Miguel de Allende’s Hotel Matilda, will debut the 60-room Hotel Cacao on Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue in the heart of the restaurant, club and boutique scene. A contemporary design will feature interiors with bold color accents, a rooftop bar, a central courtyard with a lily pond and art donated by fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger. Rates will range from $196 to $500 per room, per night, double, including continental breakfast.

In Caribbean Airline News, American Airlines on Oct. 2 plans to launch its first service to Cap Haitien, Haiti with daily nonstop service from Miami, pending DOT approval. Cap Haitien is the second largest airport in Haiti, after Port-au-Prince.
Elsewhere in the region, Delta will add 4 weekly, seasonal flights to its network of flight service between Atlanta and Belize, effective Dec. 4.The carrier currently offers eight roundtrip flights a week year-round. The airline will also resume its weekly seasonal service from Los Angeles to Belize on Nov. 7, seven weeks earlier than the year prior.
